Questioning the current impact of Anglo-Saxon hegemony on the spectacularization of affections, this series aims to reflect on the ways in which love and the literary universe intersect in Ibero-American cinema in recent decades.
Its title is a translation into Spanish of a phrase taken from the song «Problema de Expression» by the Portuguese band Clã as a response to the following passage: «It should be like in the movies / The English language is always good / And I never betray anyone». Bearing in mind that any translation always implies countless «betrayals» to the original meaning, the cycle aims to examine common denominators that result from shared historical and cultural legacies, but also idiosyncrasies and own ways of expressing love within the Iberian and Ibero-American spaces, thus bringing up questions of linguistic and cultural translation.
In a co-organization of CHAM-Centro de Humanidades (NOVA FCSH), Institute of Art History (NOVA FCSH), Center for Comparative Studies (University of Lisbon), Medeia Filmes and Leopardo Filmes, the cycle will debate issues related to these themes, from a selection of twelve films. At the end of each screening, film critics, writers, translators, artists, psychoanalysts, historians, anthropologists, sociologists and others will comment on the works in the light of these problems and concerns that mark contemporaneity. The sessions will be fortnightly, and will take place at 7 pm at Cinema Nimas, in Lisbon. The cycle is curated by Ana Bela Morais, Bruno Marques and Isabel Araújo Branco.
