In a partnership between ICNOVA and CECC (Universidade Católica Portuguesa), the cycle “Algorithms, Audiovisual and Cinema” is an initiative that promotes dialogue between researchers, audiovisual professionals, and audiences about algorithmic mediation and datafication of the sector and society.

The development and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in the audiovisual sector has been growing in recent years. From the automation through algorithmic mediation of content in streaming services (such as Netflix, Disney+ or HBO Max) to the use of A.I. tools to support studios’ decisions (on topics such as casting or narratives to greenlight), the impact of algorithmic systems on the design, production and reception of audiovisual content is undeniable.

Despite this impact, the dialogue about algorithmic proliferation – including risks, opportunities, and limits – is incipient. The initiative “Algorithms, Audiovisual and Cinema” emerges in this context, as a cycle of online conversations that bring together researchers, audiovisual professionals, and audiences to talk about these themes.

The cycle is the result of a partnership between ICNOVA, through iNOVA Media Lab, and CECC (Universidade Católica Portuguesa). The first edition took place in 2022, with four conversations led by national and international experts. The initiative resumed in 2023, with four more sessions on the agenda.
