PAFSE is a science education project, funded by the European Commission through Horizon 2020 programme, developed in 4 countries (Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Poland) and coordinated by UNL (ENSP-NOVA), on challenges of public health and sustainable development.

PAFSE makes use of project-based learning, educational scenarios and digital learning objects to engage a wide range of actors (e.g., schools, universities, research centres, enterprises, NGOs, open science platforms) in integrated teaching-learning activities that address global issues through an open schooling model. The consortium developed 7 educational clusters, with epicenter in schools, in 4 countries (Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Poland).

The learning activities contribute to studentsknowledge and interest on STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) curricula and careers and about issues that require integrated action, with a focus on zoonotic diseases and epidemics. Other topics and global challenges linked to public health (e.g., socioenvironmental determinants of health, healthy lifestyles, non-communicable diseases, vaccination hesitancy, resistance to antibiotics, road traffic accidents, pollution, energy poverty, sustainable mobility, climate change) are explored in the STEM activities and school research projects.
