Portal Revistas de Ideias e Cultura (RIC, ric.slhi.pt) is a program for the study and reproduction of Portuguese magazines from the 20th century developed by the Free Seminar on the History of Ideas (www.slhi.pt), since the beginning of the present century, in partnership with the Mário Soares Foundation and the National Library of Portugal.

Strictly speaking, RIC is not a project, in the sense that the word has acquired in academic institutional everyday life, but a general and open program of scientific work with stages and phased results.

At the origin of the research program are:

  • the verification that magazines of ideas and culture are primordial sources of the cultural and political history of the 20th century;
  • the recognition that access to complete collections of these publications proves to be difficult even in leading institutions;
  • the evidence that the content of journals entails specific epistemological problems, inherent to their thematic, registration and authorship diversity, in addition to the extension and programmatic drift that they often manifest.

The response to the situation described is based on the specific combination of three areas of knowledge:

  • clarification of the History of Ideas, which supports the identification of journal titles to be considered and the interpretation of the meaning of their contents;
  • the contribution of Information Sciences, indispensable for the systematic analysis of published materials, both in the descriptive plan and in the context of the creation of files, thesauri and indexes;
  • the technological service of IT, which provides the instruments necessary for recording and managing images and data, as well as for building and publishing the final results.

It is assumed that the sites already published not only attest to the virtuality inherent in the aforementioned disciplinary confluence, but also constitute examples of research and editing in line with the historiographical standards of the era of the Digital Humanities.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective is to publish constellations of sites online that make it possible to map the history of ideas and culture of the 20th century through the study and consultation of the magazines that gave it existence.

The realization of this goal has three main expressions:

  • a general site – Revistas de Ideias e Cultura – which gathers information on the role of magazines in contemporary culture and on the range of different titles published in Portugal in the 20th century;
  • sites specifically dedicated to a title, where its collection can be consulted according to indexes and accompanied by extensive documentation related to it;
  • the possibility of accessing journals in an aggregated and transversal way, namely by joining titles and documentation inherent to the same intellectual movement or sensibility.

As the doctrinal conceptions of the 19th century proved to be very attractive to thinkers, writers and artists, the identification of the periodicals that gave expression to them allows segmenting titles according to clear affinities and, thus, approaching in a segmented way a public space that tended towards great diversity and complexity.
