Resulting from a partnership with the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, this project focuses on the artistic production of Portuguese artists in the period following the 1974 revolution and seeks to define their contribution to the historical revision of that period and the representation of Portuguese women in the political context of democratic transformation.

Starting from an image of post-revolutionary Portugal as a territory of convergence of collective and transnational interventions that combined creativity and civic participation, the IHA seed-project “Cartographies of female creativity, 1974-1979” proposes a transnational perspective that integrates Portuguese artists in international circuits and solidarity networks.

It aims to create an online database, entitled “Female Creativity in Portugal: Sources and testimonies”, from which it will be possible to map the national and international circulation of Portuguese artists and also the presence of foreign artists in Portugal in the period after the 1974 revolution.

Besides highlighting the participation of Portuguese artists in the definition of the post-revolutionary artistic environment and its democratic aspirations, and the international dialogues they established, this project also underlines the impact of exhibitions and artistic events held in the post-revolutionary period and their role in the renovation of the country through the promotion of new forms of expression and intervention in the public space.

As part of this project, the exhibition “Paula Rego e Salette Tavares: cartographies of female creativity in the 1970s” was held from 5 November 2022 to 21 May 2023 at the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, Cascais, which resulted in a digital catalogue edited by IHA researcher Leonor de Oliveira (GI MuSt) and Catarina Alfaro, curators of the exhibition.

This publication is part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Salette Tavares’ birth and anticipates the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25th April Revolution, seeking to promote a critical reflection on the revolution and the democratisation process that followed.
