In its third edition, the Causa Efeito Festival, the New Jazz Festival of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, welcomed a guest country to its program for the first time, thanks to the support of the Italian Institute. Once again featuring a carefully selected selection of the most innovative jazz musicians from the Portuguese and international scene, curated by Pedro Costa, Causa Efeito ’25 presented this year, over three days at the Campolide Campus, a series of original concerts, masterclasses, and debates that explore the link between the University’s culture of innovation and restlessness and experimentation in artistic practice. The focus on Italy proposes a rethinking of its decisive role in new European jazz, both in relation to an ever-challenging tradition associated with historic names such as Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, the Italian Instabile Orchestra, and our guest Paolo Angeli, and in the recent presence of catalysts from the most exciting European jazz scene, such as Giuseppe Doronzo and Pasquale Caló. Continuing its programming style, always focused on discovering unlikely and innovative crossovers through commissions and new ensembles, the Festival also presented several first encounters, such as Caló with Rodrigo Pinheiro, José Soares with Kit Downes, Camila Nebbia and Drew Gress with Old Mountain, and Sprotch, which brings together Paul Nilssen-Love, Alfred Wammer, Yedo Gibson, and Michael Formanek. Causa Efeito, the principle of improvisation: innovation, discovery, surprise.
