Through the European project WEAVE, a team coordinated by ICNOVA developed a real-time video annotation tool. “MotionNotes” brings new possibilities to choreographers and performing artists, but its usefulness has been explored in multiple applications and domains.

Choreographers, dancers, and others involved in performing arts processes know well the importance of taking notes to improve performances and correct movements. However, the annotation process is often manual, asynchronous with the performance and difficult to trace.

This is the context where the annotation software “MotionNotes” aims to make a difference. The tool allows you to annotate video in real time, in addition to annotating over existing videos. With this, it gives choreographers and performers the possibility to create notes on the spot, always associated with specific movements in the performance video.

By allowing the storage of annotations throughout the entire creative process, “MotionNotes” facilitates the production of dynamic digital files, something that can also be interesting as an instigator of new creative processes.

Besides dance and performance, the tool is being used in other areas where annotation of movement performance is needed, such as in sports (for annotation of detailed technical movement), anthropology and education.

“MotionNotes” is part of the European project WEAVE, a consortium of 12 partners from eight countries. In Portugal, Carla Fernandes (ICNOVA, research group Performance & Cognition) coordinates the national partners – Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCSH and FCT) and Associação Pédexumbo – in the activities of development of software for annotation and transmission of dance and performing arts movements.
