The main aim of the History in the Public Sphere programme is to open the doors of the IHC to civic participation in the processes of history-making, on the one hand, and to bring historical culture to the public square, on the other.

In the course of IHC’s history of over 30 years, several topics have been addressed and deepened, starting with the study of Liberalism, the Portuguese First Republic or the Estado Novo dictatorship. However, in more recent years, our research has extended to other fields and approaches. From cultural studies to colonialism, from social history to the history of science; from oral history to the use of digital humanities; from community archaeology to the use of museum sources.

At the IHC, we provide partnerships across a wide range of fields and methodological approaches, drawing on our approximately 150 researchers of diverse nationalities.
