The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine was founded on April 24, 1902, by law of King Carlos I, as the School of Tropical Medicine, a field of knowledge that until the beginning of the 20th century was taught at the Naval Academy. In 1935, the School of Tropical Medicine was renamed the Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMT). At that time, it was still located in the National Cordoaria. Coinciding with the Sixth International Congresses of Tropical Medicine and Malaria in Lisbon in 1958, the new building was inaugurated in Junqueira, which remains to this day. After 1935, the school had several names until its current name, the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In 1980, it was integrated into the New University of Lisbon.

The Museum dates back to the founding of the School of Tropical Medicine, being referenced in its first regulations of 1902 (Chapters V and XI – http://hdl.handle.net/10362/108434). At the time, its main mission was to support teaching and research through “material collected at the Colonial Hospital and the Hospitals of the Overseas Provinces” (Article 23), rather than simply exhibiting or displaying museum or heritage objects of interest in the health field.
