In the year of its 50th anniversary celebrations and the launch of a University cultural program, NOVA proposes a series of initiatives designed to reflect—in the city and with the city—on the University’s place today. Opening its spaces to the community through cultural initiatives for all audiences, collaborating with cultural institutions in Greater Lisbon, or occupying spaces woven into the daily lives of those who circulate through the city for a few weeks, NOVA thus marks five decades of a project that, born in a period of change and new beginnings, has always combined a drive for renewal with the desire to affirm the idea of a university attentive to the present. Two projects with the Urban Art Gallery deserve special mention:

1. The Arts Train – a partnership between NOVA and the Municipal Councils of Lisbon (through its Urban Art Gallery), Oeiras, and Cascais, resulted from this desire to take the fiftieth anniversary celebrations beyond Nova’s premises with an artistic and cultural intervention based on the means of transportation that connects three of the municipalities where it operates, with eight of its schools. Curated by the Urban Art Gallery of the Lisbon City Council and integrated into the Muro 2023 Festival, we propose an artistic intervention on train carriages on the Cascais line, featuring the vinyl painting of works by two artists or artist collectives linked to urban art, on display from October to December 2023.

2. Urban Art Tour at Nova Schools Beginning in the fiftieth anniversary year, the Nova Cultura Program, in collaboration with the Urban Art Gallery, will create an urban art piece in each of Nova’s Schools, opening the University’s spaces to the city and connecting Nova’s spaces with contemporary reflection on art, sustainability, and urban culture.
