Viewed as a vast and rich problem, the ‘spectral question’ has been the subject of several approaches in the last decades in the fields of literary studies, film studies, media studies, art theory and cultural studies. In Portugal, the study of spectrality is still sparse, lacking deepening and systematisation.
The aim of this project is to create conditions for an in-depth study of spectrality in Portuguese literature and in the arts, focusing on Portugal and Brazil, through a mapping of the theme that allows, at the same time, to gather, systematize and analyse the works on the topic conducted so far, and to enhance an in-depth study of the spectral imagination that contributes in an innovative way to the reading of concepts, works and authors still little discussed in this perspective.
This project addresses the double nature of the ghost as figure and as concept, based on the way literature, cinema and photography have always faced the problems of representation, figuration and inscription of the ghost. This will contribute, at the same time, to evaluate the relevance of the Portuguese and Brazilian contexts in a state-of-the-art reflection on the spectral and to articulate in the same debate the representation of the ghost with the questioning of the materiality and reflexivity of the means of representation, in a conceptual network where several intersections are possible.
