Serving this mission means considering the innovative ways in which art, at its interface with technology, has faced and enhanced the challenges of the contemporary world, namely those related to social justice, ecological sustainability, and economic development, emphasizing the importance of the dynamic relationship between the social sciences, art, culture, and technology for their solution and overcoming.
As NOVA’s mission is to serve society, locally and globally, through knowledge developed from teaching and research of excellence, with a high social and economic impact, the creation of NOVA IAT, resulting from a consortium between FCT and FCSH, contributes to the fulfillment of this mission and also fills an important gap, given that in the Greater Lisbon region there is no center for artistic creation that is simultaneously valued and transfers technology linked to the arts
NOVA IAT will focus on qualified training and laboratory-based research (problem-based & project-driven), geared towards the development of research and creation projects and production, in different artistic areas and integrating a strong technological component. Thus, the main areas of activity of NOVA IAT are Training, Research, Innovation, and Service Provision.
Training
- Advanced, Intermediate, and Introductory Training Courses
Short courses on topics such as Contemporary Artistic Practices,Photography, Digital and 3D Animation, Art and Creative Leadership, Designing Inclusive Spaces, Filmmaking and Cinematography, Post-production, among others, which can be converted into credits for programs at NOVA and other partner universities.
- Degree-Granting Training
Will contribute credits (ECTS) to existing study cycles at FCT (e.g., Master’s in Conservation and Restoration and Master’s in Art and Science of Glass), at FCSH (e.g., Master’s in Performing Arts, Master’s in Musical Arts, and Doctorate in Artistic Studies: Arts and Mediation) and at both (e.g.Joint Doctorate in Digital Media). NOVA IAT also plans to create a master’s and a doctorate that will serve as an anchor for its cross-cutting activity.
Research
- Research will be guided by creative and experimental projects and, therefore, based in technological and artistic laboratories: Cinema and Visual Arts Lab, Digital Arts Lab, Fashion and Design Lab, Performance and Performing Arts Lab, Sound and Music Arts Lab, Heritage and Urban Studies, Critical Studies Lab.
- In addition, there is the ‘Street which results from the convergence of the other Labs and serves as an interface with the community in general, and particularly with the local youth population, supporting them in their art and technology projects or promoting their training and capacity building.
- The research conducted is also intended to focus on the future and the challenges of sustainable development, and is therefore intrinsically interdisciplinary and collaborative, bringing together academics, specialists, resident artists from Portugal and abroad, business professionals, students, and also international networks.
Innovation
- HEDGE (Heritage, Digitalization, and Empowerment for Global Engagement) is a research and innovation project developed by NOVA University Lisbon, dedicated to the preservation, accessibility, and internationalization of Portuguese cultural heritage.
- Closely linked to research and aligned with the needs of national and international companies and various social sectors that will shape the ‘innovation agenda’.
- The aim is for innovation to be geared towards creating value in terms of products, services, and environments.
Provision of Services
- It will be a center dedicated to providing services to the surrounding community and society in general: organization of events (festivals, exhibitions, conferences, thematic cycles); consulting; development of products to order, among other services.
