The Tuna Médica de Lisboa (TML) was born through the combined efforts of students from Lisbon’s two medical schools: the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon. It set a precedent never before seen, thus easing old rivalries, and today it is one of the most striking symbols of the academic tradition of both faculties.
The beginning of this group’s artistic and bohemian life, with a mix of male and female voices (some better than others…), took place on December 6, 1995, at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the first rehearsal at the Faculty of Medicine.
Since then, much has changed in TML’s reputation, both within and outside the academic world. This recognition has been reflected in the invitations extended to the Tuna, which has allowed its music and academic spirit to be toured throughout mainland Portugal, the islands, and that great country that is abroad!
Every year, many Tunos exchange their black cape for the immaculate gown, but the passion for Music and the tunante life that unites us means that TML, generation after generation, continues to spread joy and good humor on stage throughout the country and beyond borders, which, together with all the excitement and liveliness off stage, become the hallmark of this Tuna.
